Dollar General Awaits Incentives for $60M Bessemer, Alabama, Distribution Center

Discount retailer Dollar General is planning to build a 1 million-square-foot distribution center in Bessemer, Alabama, creating 650 jobs, al.com reports. The company is now seeking local and county incentives to fund the $60 million investment.

"We believe the Birmingham region is a great fit for our needs," said Tawn Earnest, senior director of corporate communications at Dollar General. "We already serve shoppers in this region with more than 100 neighborhood stores."

The city and county are expected to approve incentives for the company on December 28. While the final incentives package has not been released, Dollar General is requesting funding including 10 years of property tax abatement and $550,000 in occupational tax refunds.

The state of Alabama has already approved a $1.4 million access road and a traffic signal requested by Dollar General.

Local officials say the incentives are a good investment for the city.

"They're building a 50-year building," said Shan Paden, Bessemer city attorney. "With Dollar General, this is a company that is not going away."
