Walmart Plans Midwest Distribution Center in Mankato, Minnesota
03/07/2013
“The Mankato distribution center will play an important role in Walmart’s ability to serve customers in the region,” said Kevin X. Jones, Walmart Divisional Vice President of Supply Chain. “It’s proximity to the service area will have a positive impact on customers and the environment by reducing the food miles traveled and helping ensure customers get the freshest products.”
The facility will be used primarily for the distribution of perishable products throughout the Upper Midwest. Walmart’s employment plans for the Mankato facility are expected to exceed commitments outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding and Business Subsidy Agreement the company signed with the city in 2007, Mankato City Manager Pat Hentges said in a report to the city commission. The facility is expected to open in late 2015.
“Walmart’s significant investment in a distribution center is a positive development for the region,” said Bruce Nustad, Minnesota Retailers Association president. “It means job creation and business growth—two things we want to encourage in Minnesota.”
