Abu Dhabi to Build World’s First Zero-Carbon City

01/24/2008
Construction is set to begin within the next month on what developers are calling the world's first zero-carbon city. The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, a consortium of developers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, have unveiled plans for Masdar City, which will be run entirely on renewable energy - primarily solar power via photovoltaic panels that take advantage of the city's desert location. Upon completion in 2013, the 2.4-square-mile city is expected to have 1,500 businesses and 50,000 residents, all using a light railway line and automated transport pods - similar to elevators but with horizontal design - to move around. The city will be located near enough to the Persian Gulf to take advantage of sea breezes for cooling, and a perimeter wall will be built around the city to block hot desert air and noise from nearby Abu Dhabi Airport. The government of Abu Dhabi has pledged US$15 billion toward the project.
