Scotland Strengthens Life Sciences Sector

06/12/2007

The University of Edinburgh and Scotland's National Health Service have partnered with development officials and real estate investors on the Edinburgh BioQuarter. Plans are to develop 1.4 million square feet of academic, institutional, and commercial life sciences infrastructure on the 100-acre site. The complex's first building, an 80,000-square-foot flagship center, will offer laboratory and research space specifically designed with amenities for both emerging and established biotech businesses, and is expected to open in 2009.

In Livingston, Scotland, Quintiles Transnational will build a new facility for its product development business. The Durham, North Carolina-based life sciences company will invest nearly US$15 million and plans to create 150 new jobs over the next four years.
