General Atomics Expands San Diego, California, Operations

06/23/2026
Fusion energy technology company General Atomics plans to expand its operations in San Diego, California.

The company’s new Blanket Component Test Facility will serve as a hub for scientists and engineers from industry, government, and academia working to advance fusion energy technologies and accelerate the path toward commercial fusion power generation.

“We are grateful for this award and energized by what it means for the future of fusion in San Diego,” said Anantha Krishnan, Senior Vice President of the General Atomics Energy Group. “This support will aid General Atomics’ continued investment in the research and capabilities needed to move fusion closer to realization, while strengthening our clean energy future. Facilities like the BCTF are where fusion research begins moving closer to real-world energy, and we are proud to help lead that work in California.”

To support the project, General Atomics was awarded a $20 million California Competes Tax Credit. Administered by GO-Biz, the program is designed to encourage business investment, job creation, and economic growth throughout California.

“Through the California Competes Tax Credit, we are doubling down on the ingenuity and innovation that will define the future. By further investing in the fusion sector, we are helping ensure California remains a global leader in both the industries of today and the transformative technologies of tomorrow,” noted Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of GO-Biz.

General Atomics is a technology company that develops advanced systems for defense, aerospace, energy, and scientific research applications. The company’s operations include unmanned aircraft systems, satellite technologies, nuclear fusion research, advanced manufacturing, and electromagnetic systems development.
