Battery Maker Expanding, Adding 800+ Jobs in Indiana

EnerDel, a manufacturer of compact lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles, will expand its research and cell production center in Indianapolis, Indiana, equip a battery pack assembly center in Noblesville, Indiana, and locate a full-scale manufacturing operation at a site in the state yet to be determined. The company says it plans to create more than 850 new jobs over the next four years as a result of the expansions. EnerDel is a subsidiary of New York-based Ener1, which also develops fuel cell products. The state has offered the company incentives that include up to $7.125 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $58,000 in training grants, contingent on job creation. The cities of Indianapolis and Noblesville are considering property tax abatement proposals; the company says it will seek similar agreements when the manufacturing site location is determined.
