Continental Mills Upgrades Its Effingham, Illinois, Baking Facility

07/16/2014
Continental Mills, Inc. invested more than $2 million to complete a major upgrade of its recently acquired manufacturing facility in Effingham, Illinois.

"This is an investment in Continental Mills and this community," said the company's Senior Vice President of Operations Mike Meredith. "The upgrades and improvements we have made position us well for long-term growth. We're proud to keep these jobs here in Effingham and expect to add more in the future."

Continental Mills invested more than $2 million its recently acquired 190,000-square-foot facility, which produces dry mixes for baking. Improvements include upgrades to information technology systems, process controls and infrastructure. The renovated facility will have increased production capacity, and updated systems that will provide greater reliability and connect to the broader company systems.

The facility was acquired from Harlan Bakeries in December of 2013 with Continental Mills taking over operation on June 29, 2014. All 13 people previously employed by Harlan were retained by Continental Mills. Two people who were previously part-time contractors were brought on as full-time employees. This brings the total number of employees at the site to 15, with potential for further growth in the next year.

The company said it will finalize plans to phase in the production of various products from its portfolio over the next six to 12 months while continuing to work in partnership with Harlan to supply its customers. During this time, the company will evaluate new production opportunities at the plant with its increased capabilities.

"The city of Effingham welcomes Continental Mills as a valued community partner," said Mayor Merv Gillenwater. "Their investment will help us grow our economy and strengthen our city. Today we see another great example of how Effingham is a great place to live and do business."
