Sustainable Construction Products Startup Investing $11 Million for Alabama Factory

09/01/2009
Green Solar Companies, a startup manufacturer of sustainable building materials, will invest $11 million to open a headquarters and manufacturing facility in Birmingham, Alabama, to build structurally insulated building panels, according to the Birmingham News. The company plans to create 150 new jobs over three years, beginning with 50 workers during the first year of operations. "The manufacturing facility is the outgrowth of my vision and my team members' vision of where the construction industry is going," says Glenn Ford, the company's founder, quoted in the News. "We feel in the 21st century and beyond, structural insulated panels are going to replace two-by-four frame construction. They're more energy-efficient, they're a cost savings, and they reduce waste on the job site." The facility will consist of 56,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 16,000 square feet of administrative space that will also include an incubator program. The city will provide $150,000 in occupational tax refunds over a 10-year period; the company will also apply for grants being offered through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for sustainable industries. Construction is scheduled to begin next month, with completion expected in August 2010.
