Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals: State of Logistics Report

The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals finds in its State of Logistics report that the recession has profoundly wounded the industry.

In its annual State of Logistics report, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals finds that the cost of U.S. business logistics systems dropped more than 18 percent last year, the largest drop in the history of the 21-series report. Along with a drop in 2008, logistics costs have dropped nearly $300 billion during the recession. In 2009, logistics costs as a percentage of nominal GDP reached a historic 7.7 percent low.

The recession has been one of the greatest negative factors on the logistics industry. Declines in shipment volumes across all industry sectors, climbing inventories, and decreased orders for new goods contributed to the decline.
