British-Based Aptiv Opens Boston, Massachusetts, Technology Center
12/13/2017
The new Boston Seaport facility joins Aptiv's technology centers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Mountain View, California, focused on automated mobility-on-demand and data management development.
"Boston has become a leading global city for the development of autonomous driving solutions, making it the ideal location for our new technology center" said Kevin Clark, Aptiv President & CEO. "We look forward to working closely with Mayor Walsh and Boston's world- class research centers and talent base to move mobility forward in the City and across the globe."
Aptiv said it selected Boston's Seaport district as the location of its new technical center due to the City's technically proficient work force, world-class universities, and local government's track record of supporting technology and growth.
"A year ago, I issued an executive order that welcomed researchers and companies to Boston, inviting them to explore how autonomous vehicle technology can help further our transportation goals of safety, access, and reliability, as outlined in Boston's long-term plans Imagine Boston 2030 and 'Go Boston 2030,' said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. "We are pleased that Aptiv will locate their new mobility innovation center in Boston, tapping into the wealth of talent here and strengthening Boston's role as a leader in innovation."
According to company officials, automated driving technology has the potential to help the city of Boston increase accessibility to public transit and alleviate congestion. Opportunities for Aptiv to launch advanced mobility pilot programs in the Boston market include linking neighborhoods not directly connected by public transit as well as providing transit between destinations without nearby transit stations or other transit options.
"Aptiv intends to apply its mobility solutions to assist the city of Boston with all of its smart city activities, specifically, the 'Go Boston 2030' initiative that envisions a more efficient transportation network by leveraging automated mobility," said Glen De Vos, Aptiv Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer.
nuTonomy, an autonomous vehicle start-up recently acquired by Aptiv, recently launched an automated driving pilot program in Boston's Seaport district, where challenging urban surroundings and diverse weather conditions create ideal conditions for automated driving development, company officials said.
Karl Iagnemma, nuTonomy's President, said, "As an MIT graduate and long-time Massachusetts resident, I know that Boston is the right place to base an organization that's reliant on recruiting the world's smartest engineers. We are proud of the milestones we've already achieved in Boston, and look forward to continued progress as part of Aptiv, as we strive to re-shape the global urban mobility landscape."
