Great Southern Wood-NC Plans Laurinburg, North Carolina, Lumber Treatment Operations

Pressure-treated lumber manufacturer Great Southern Wood-NC, Inc. plans to establish operations in Scotland County, North Carolina. The $40 million project is expected to create 43 jobs.

The investment will include the construction of a new manufacturing facility that will be located at the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport.

“The forest sector serves as a critical foundation for economic success in all 100 counties,” noted North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. “Great Southern Wood will benefit from our manufacturing economy, our skilled workforce, and our unwavering commitment to driving economic growth in each corner of the state.”

A performance-based grant of $200,000 from the One North Carolina Fund will help support the project. The OneNC Fund provides financial assistance to local governments to help attract economic investment and create jobs. Companies receive no money upfront and must meet job creation and capital investment targets to qualify for payment. All OneNC grants require matching participation from local governments, and any award is contingent upon that condition being met.

In addition to the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC), other partners in the project include the North Carolina General Assembly, North Carolina Department of Transportation, North Carolina Community College System, Richmond Community College, Golden LEAF Foundation, North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR), CSX Rail, North Carolina’s Southeast, Duke Energy, Southeast Regional Airport Authority, Scotland County, Scotland County Economic Development Corporation, Town of Maxton, and City of Laurinburg.

“Rail-served businesses like Great Southern Wood-NC understand the benefits of lower transportation costs, greater supply chain efficiency and expanded market access,” noted Carl Warren, president and CEO of the North Carolina Railroad Company.

Great Southern Wood is a manufacturer of pressure-treated lumber and distributor of building materials for residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural markets.
