11/01/2025
Financial technology company SmartWiz plans to expand its headquarters operations in Birmingham, Alabama. The $125,000 project is expected to create 66 jobs over the next five years.

“This is a huge accomplishment for SmartWiz,” said Tevin Harrell, Founder and CEO of SmartWiz. “As a business owner, people are your biggest investment. With support from the Birmingham Business Alliance, Jefferson County, the City of Birmingham and the State of Alabama to help offset training, we’re not only able to attract top talent to the Birmingham region but also strengthen our path toward becoming a billion-dollar company within the next five years.”

The project is being supported by the Alabama Department of Commerce, which is providing tax incentives tied to job creation milestones, and state workforce development agency AIDT, which is providing services valued at $780,000. Additionally, the City of Birmingham and Jefferson County are providing local job creation incentives totaling a combined $231,000.

“SmartWiz’s decision to grow in Birmingham reinforces that Alabama has the talent, resources and supportive business climate that innovative companies need to succeed,” noted Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. “This expansion not only brings high-quality jobs to Jefferson County but also strengthens our state’s growing tech ecosystem.”

SmartWiz is an AI-enabled tax preparation software firm that provides automated solutions for tax professionals and CPAs. The company’s platform streamlines the tax filing process by using artificial intelligence to extract data from client documents, organize information, and input it into tax forms.

“SmartWiz is showing that Birmingham is a place where innovative companies can thrive and scale,” added Steve Ammons, President & CEO of the Birmingham Business Alliance. “We’re proud to support their team as they expand and innovate, and we remain committed to helping SmartWiz—and other tech startups—achieve success and drive Birmingham’s reputation as a hub for technology and innovation.”
