Honda Motor Plans Alliston, Ontario, Canada, EV Production-Battery Operations

04/30/2024
Honda Motor Co. Ltd. plans to expand operations and establish electric vehicle and battery production in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. The $11 billion project is expected to create 1,000 jobs.

The company will construct four new manufacturing plants including an electric vehicle assembly plant as well as a new stand-alone battery manufacturing plant. Honda will also build a cathode active material and precursor (CAM/pCAM) processing plant through a joint venture partnership with POSCO Future M Co., Ltd. and a separator plant through a joint venture partnership with Asahi Kasei Corporation. Electric vehicle production is scheduled to begin in 2028.

“Honda of Canada Manufacturing is one of the premier automotive manufacturing facilities in the world and for nearly forty years, our work has been guided by determination, innovation, and a relentless drive to evolve,” said Jean Marc Leclerc, President and CEO of Honda Canada Inc. “Today’s announcement is a historic investment by a manufacturer in the Canadian auto industry. It proudly honours the highly skilled associates who have earned a global reputation for manufacturing excellence and represents Honda’s recognition of the long-term attractiveness of the Canadian electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem.”

To support this project, Honda is collaborating with the governments of Canada and Ontario to drive innovation in low-emissions manufacturing by accessing performance-based initiatives available through the federal government’s new Investment Tax Credits and provincial direct and indirect incentives.

"Several years in the making, Honda's historic investment represents a vote of confidence in Ontario's status as a leading jurisdiction in the global production and development of electric vehicles, batteries, and battery materials,” noted The Hon. Vic Fedeli, Ontario's Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “As our province continues to build a fully integrated end-to-end electric vehicle supply chain, Honda's investment will play an integral role in advancing the innovative technologies that will define the future of automotive design, while securing thousands of good-paying jobs for workers in Alliston and across the province. Thank you, Honda, for choosing Ontario."

Honda Canada Inc. is the parent company for both Honda and Acura vehicle brands in Canada. The company produces Honda engines and more than 10 million cars and light trucks at its Alliston manufacturing facilities, where Honda Civic and Honda CR-V are currently built. Honda has invested over $6.5 billion in Canadian operations.
