IonQ Expands Bothell, Washington, Operations

05/05/2026
Quantum computing company IonQ plans to expand its operations in Bothell, Washington. The project is expected to create at least 1,200 over the next five years.

The investment at the company’s existing facility, which serves as a hub for quantum computer manufacturing, research and development, and data center operations, will increase its production of atom-based quantum systems.

“Washington is rapidly becoming a critically important region for quantum manufacturing,” said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ. “This investment allows us to accelerate expansion, scale production, and create thousands of high-wage jobs.”

To support the project, IonQ was awarded $500,000 from the Economic Development Strategic Reserve Fund, with funds allocated for building upgrades, workforce development, and related expansion costs. The award is matched by more than $14 million in private investment.

“This expansion reflects confidence in Washington’s ability to support innovation and business growth,” noted Sarah Clifthorne, Interim Director of the Washington State Department of Commerce. “We are ready to support the thousands of jobs this project will create.”

IonQ develops and operates quantum computers using trapped-ion technology, providing quantum computing access through cloud platforms for research and commercial applications. The company’s operations include hardware development, software integration, and quantum system manufacturing.

“Snohomish County has a deep legacy of innovation,” added Ray Stephanson, President and CEO of the Economic Alliance Snohomish County. “Investments like this reinforce our region’s leadership in next-generation technologies and economic growth.”
