PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and Origis Energy Build 80 MW Solar Project in Covington County, Alabama

06/29/2020
PowerSouth Energy Cooperative and Origis Energy are undertaking a 80 megawatt large scale solar project to be constructed in Covington County, Alabama.

Based in Andalusia, Alabama, PowerSouth is a generation and transmission cooperative that serves the wholesale energy needs of 16 electric cooperatives and four municipal electric systems in Alabama and northwest Florida. Collectively, the members provide electric service to homes, businesses and industries in 39 Alabama and 10 Florida counties.

Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Origis Energy delivers excellence in solar and energy storage development, financing, engineering, procurement and construction and operations, maintenance and asset management for investors and clean energy consumers in the US.

According to company officials, “once completed the Wing Solar project will add the largest amount to date of clean, renewable, solar-generated energy to PowerSouth Energy Cooperative’s generation mix. The 80 MW solar facility is enough to power approximately 13,000 homes annually. Wing Solar is a project by Origis Energy. It is scheduled to come online in late 2022.”

“Our mission is to safely deliver reliable and affordable energy to promote development of the communities our members serve,” says Gary Smith, PowerSouth President & CEO. “Solar energy is a cost effective resource for a portion of our energy needs. Affordable, zero-carbon, renewable energy supports our mission – today and in the future.”

Origis Energy CEO and President, Guy Vanderhaegen, added, “A tremendous amount of work goes into the realization of a utility scale solar project by all parties involved, from the local level, the utility and our team here at Origis. We commend the leadership at PowerSouth and its members for their vision to bring clean, cost effective solar energy to their customers. We are confident that determination will result, even in these challenging times, in a successful completion of Wing Solar in Alabama.”

The addition of solar energy to PowerSouth’s generation portfolio promotes further diversification of its energy mix, allowing PowerSouth to safely deliver reliable and affordable energy to its ratepayers and promote community development, officials said.
