Ion Labs Expands Campus in Largo, Florida, Amidst Changes in Federal Legislation
01/02/2019
The company is an FDA registered, cGMP certified contract manufacturer that has been providing customers with the highest quality products in the supplement, pet, OTC and skin care manufacturing. Ion Labs offers a wide array of product development, contract manufacturing, packaging, raw material/finished product testing, and regulatory support to domestic and international customers.
In 2019 ION will begin Hemp and CBD manufacturing with plan to incorporate a large range of these products into the operation. Ion Labs plans to focus on manufacturing Hemp and CBD ingestibles and topical products.
Last month the company reported it will add a 190,000 square foot plant to its current 150,000 square foot facility in Largo.
Expansion became judicious when President Donald Trump signed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, better known as the Farm Bill, which removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act; It amended the definition of marijuana by removing hemp and all parts of the plant and all derivatives from the definition.
The amendment, Section 297A of the Act, now clearly defines “hemp as the plant, or any part of that plant (whether growing or not) including all seeds, salts, salts of isomers, acids, cannabinoids, derivatives, and extracts, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration of no more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”
Section 7125 of the Act also allows the development of industrial hemp and the development of new and emerging commercial products derived from hemp.
According to company officials, “hemp being a gold mine for agriculture innovation provides a huge market in the health and wellness industry. One of the more promising components of Hemp is CBD. CBD (cannabidiol) is currently one of the major emerging products in the U.S. dietary supplement market. According to Hemp Business Journal, the CBD market is estimated to grow by 700 percent by 2020 and become a $2.1 billion industry.”
