SAPA Transmission Expands Macomb County, Michigan, Operations

08/18/2026
Combat vehicle mobility systems manufacturer SAPA Transmission plans to expand its operations in Shelby Township, Michigan. The approximately $163 million project is expected to create at least 328 jobs in Macomb County.

The investment will include the construction of a new 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility which will double the company’s machine cells from three to six and enable in-house production of gears, planetary carriers and bevel gears.

“SAPA Transmission’s continued progress in Michigan is a testament to the exceptional partnership between industry, state leadership, and local communities,” said SAPA Transmission President Darren Werner. “With the support of the State of Michigan and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, we have expanded our advanced manufacturing capabilities, strengthened our Michigan-based supply chain, and invested in the workforce and technologies needed to support our nation’s defense.

To support the project, The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) Board approved a $5 million Michigan Business Development Program (MBDP) performance-based grant, as well as a 15-year, 50% State Essential Services Assessment (SESA) Exemption with an estimated value of up to $1,423,110 for its $130.2 million eligible investment in Eligible Personal Property.

“We are deeply excited that SAPA Transmission chose to continue their growth in Macomb County,” noted Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. “Manufacturing operations continue to advance as a core part of our economy, with notable assistance from our economic development team and partners. I want to extend a congratulations to everyone involved in this project.”

SAPA Transmission develops and manufactures combat vehicle mobility and transmission systems for U.S. and NATO military fleets. The company’s systems support defense programs including the Abrams Main Battle Tank and future U.S. Army mobility platforms.
