GM to Launch Volt Electric Car in California Next Year

General Motors Company (GM) will make the first units of its Volt electric vehicle available in California late next year. The Michigan-headquartered company says in a statement that the extended-range electric car will begin production sometime late next year with 4,000 to 6,000 units, with around 10,000 available during the first full year of manufacturing in 2011. "It is natural that California is the lead market for  Volt," says Brent Dewar, GM's vice president for the Global Chevrolet Brand. "Not only is it the largest automotive market, Californians are known to be leaders in adopting groundbreaking new technologies." GM is also partnering with three California utilities -- Pacific Gas and Electric, Southern California Edison, and Sacramento Municipal Utility District -- and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to create an extended, real-world demonstration and research program and set up approximately 500 charging stations for the Volt for residential, business, and public use.
