Biotechnology Company Amgen Expands Tampa, Florida, Campus

04/24/2020
Amgen, one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies, plans to expand its global capability center in the Westshore Business District in Tampa, Florida.

The company has signed a lease amendment to increase its footprint within Corporate Center One, adding 33,101-square-feet of office space. The expansion will give Amgen additional meeting and collaboration space and the ability to accommodate future growth.

Amgen chose Tampa as the site of its Global Capability Center in 2017, after evaluating more than 270 other communities nationwide. With this expansion, Amgen’s footprint will grow from a little over 130,000 square feet to more than 163,000 square feet, and the company plans to invest approximately $10 million in the expansion project.

“We are excited to expand our presence in Tampa,” said Gwen Cummings, Site Lead, Amgen Capability Center. “The community has welcomed us with open arms since our arrival. The wealth of talent and the support of the business community and local academic institutions have allowed us the opportunity to build a world-class team.”

“We are delighted to partner with Amgen as they grow their Tampa operations,” said Kyle Burd, senior vice president and managing director, Cousins Properties Incorporated. “Amgen’s expansion within Corporate Center One is a wonderful testament to the city’s diverse professional climate and vibrant community.”

Healthcare is one of Hillsborough County’s fastest-growing industries, second to information technology. Over the next five years, the healthcare and life sciences industries in Hillsborough County are projected to grow by 12.7% and 8.3%, respectively, which outpaces growth on the state and national level.

“Amgen’s decision to invest and expand in Tampa demonstrates confidence in this community and our economic future,” said Marie Chinnici-Everitt, chair of the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council and managing director of The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC). “Amgen has woven itself into the fabric of our community since its arrival, supporting local nonprofit organizations and philanthropic initiatives. We congratulate them on their expansion and thank them for strengthening their commitment to Tampa.”

Recently, Amgen and the Amgen Foundation announced an initial commitment of up to $12.5 million to support U.S. and global COVID-19 relief efforts. From this commitment, $300,000 will go to two Tampa Bay organizations, United Way Suncoast and the Hillsborough Education Foundation, to address local needs.
