Torc Robotics Plans Ann Arbor, Michigan, Engineering Operations

06/27/2025
Autonomous vehicle company Torc Robotics plans to establish operations in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The approximately $5.6 million project is expected to create 500 jobs.

The company’s new 32,000-square-foot engineering center will feature multiple collaboration spaces and hardware in the loop labs.

“This strategic location is a natural fit for Torc as we continue to advance our autonomous technology,” said Jamie Swaim, Chief People Officer at Torc. “Ann Arbor’s proximity to the Detroit automotive industry and a wealth of high-tech talent, combined with the exceptional concentration of high-caliber universities and colleges, makes it an ideal environment for our growth and productization strategy. This new center will complement the strong engineering talent we already have across the nation.”

The project is being supported by a $3 million performance-based Michigan Business Development Program grant approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund.

“We are pleased to support the continued growth and expansion of Torc, whose project is a testament to the strength of our state’s mobility industry and Michiganders’ superior skills,” noted Quentin L. Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and chair of the Michigan Strategic Fund. “My congratulations and gratitude to Torc; we are honored to earn this investment. We look forward to celebrating your future success and that of the People, Places, and Projects who will benefit from your presence in the great state of Michigan.”

Torc Robotics, an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, specializes in developing Level 4 autonomous driving systems for long-haul trucking.

“With the launch of its new engineering and innovation center in Ann Arbor, TORC is helping tell the story that this region is where mobility companies come to scale,” added Paul Krutko, president and CEO of Ann Arbor SPARK. “As a 20-year-old startup now backed by Daimler Truck, Torc’s growth reinforces Ann Arbor’s position as a destination for world-class engineering talent and next-generation transportation innovation.”
