Piston Automotive Plans Detroit, Michigan, Manufacturing Operations

02/03/2025
Piston Automotive, a subsidiary of automotive supplier Piston Group, plans to establish production operations in Detroit, Michigan. The up to $55 million project is expected to create 144 jobs.

The investment will include the lease and renovation of 200,000 feet of space at a recently built warehouse, located at 20400 Ralston Street, which will be used to manufacture hydrogen fuel cells.

“Through our Global Epicenter of Mobility program, we’ve identified hydrogen fuel cell systems as one of the mobility technologies with the highest mid-term growth potential,” said Maureen Donohue Krauss, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Partnership. “Piston Group’s project is another exciting example of how zero-emission vehicle technology is driving economic growth and investment and keeping the Detroit Region at the forefront of advanced mobility.”

The project is being supported by a $1.5 million performance-based Michigan Business Development Program.

“The DEGC is proud to support this project. We’ve worked alongside Piston Group for years, and this investment shows why Detroit is a prime location for EV manufacturing,” noted Kevin Johnson, President and CEO of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. “This expansion isn’t just about the capital investment and great-paying jobs – it’s about strengthening Detroit’s role as a hub for mobility innovation and creating real career opportunities for our residents.”

Piston Automotive specializes in vehicle systems ranging from powertrain to chassis. The company currently operates manufacturing facilities in Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

“The Piston Group is manufacturing the zero-emission technologies in demand across the globe, including from our customers here in Southeast Michigan, and we are proud to power their growth in Detroit with Michigan-made energy,” added Khalil Rahal, director, Economic Development of DTE Energy. “DTE and the Piston Group worked closely to identify the former State Fairgrounds as the ideal location for their operations. The development of this new facility will not only help revitalize local communities but will also help reinforce Michigan as the epicenter for advanced manufacturing and new mobility solutions.”
