MTU Detroit Diesel Announces South Carolina Plant
03/05/2010
The company, which produces vehicle and machinery engines, will begin fabricating Series 2000 and Series 4000 engines by the end of the year. MTU is a subsidiary of Tognum Group, based in Germany.
"The new facility in Aiken County is part of Tognum's global strategy to increase manufacturing in the markets where our products are sold," said Matthias Vogel, president and CEO of MTU. "With it we will have greater flexibility to respond to market conditions and to compete for government contracts where local content is key."
MTU's stateside base will allow the company to avoid currency fluctuations between the dollar and the Euro, as well as the expense of importing parts from Europe. The company will begin hiring employees in May, and start production in October.
