Astrobotic Technology Relocates Headquarters to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A space robotics company whose mission is to make outer space accessible to the world, Astrobotic Technology Inc. will relocate its headquarters in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The company plans to create 95 jobs and maintaining 20 jobs.

As part of Astrobotic’s relocation efforts, the company will acquire and renovate a building in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. The building will provide space for manufacturing operations and office personnel, including a place for the company to build its first commercial lunar lander, which will deliver payload to the moon.

“Pennsylvania is leading our country back to the moon. We are thrilled to build our new headquarters in the heart of Pittsburgh,” said CEO of Astrobotic Technology, John Thornton. “The facility will be purpose-built to operate landers and rovers to the lunar surface starting with our first mission in 2021.”

Astrobotic received a funding proposal from the Department of Community and Economic Development for the project including $285,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits. The company has committed to investing $6.55 million in the project, and the tax credits will be distributed upon the creation of 95 new jobs. This project was coordinated by the Governor’s Action Team.

The company makes high-capability space missions practical for a broad spectrum of business, scientific, and social applications. Astrobotic’s lunar lander, to be named Peregrine, will deliver payloads to the moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals. The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities for lunar surface operations and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications.

Originally based out of Carnegie Mellon University, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access to spark a new era of exploration, science, tourism, resource utilization, and mining.
