Germany-Based SCHOTT Pharma USA Plans Wilson, North Carolina, Production Operations
03/21/2024
The new facility will manufacture tubing, pre-finish products, and ceramics for its home tech and pharma business units. Production is scheduled for 2024.
“After conducting a nationwide search for a site that would give a campus-like option, Wilson County was chosen as a primary location to support our growth in the U.S.,” said Christopher Cassidy, President of SCHOTT North America. “The local talent pool combined with the proximity to the Research Triangle area, which hosts numerous universities, pharma companies, and research institutions, are ideal factors for the future operation of the company.”
The project is being supported, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. Using a formula that takes into account the new tax revenues generated by the new jobs, the JDIG agreement authorizes the potential reimbursement to the company of up to $4,939,000, spread over 12 years. State payments only occur following performance verification by the departments of Commerce and Revenue that the company has met its incremental job creation and investment targets.
The project’s projected return on investment of public dollars is 221 percent, meaning for every dollar of potential cost to the state, the state receives $3.21 in state revenue. JDIG projects result in positive net tax revenue to the state treasury, even after taking into consideration the grant’s reimbursement payments to a given company.
“For most of my professional career, I worked in the life science industry, so it’s especially gratifying to see how much momentum North Carolina enjoys right now with this critical sector,” noted North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders. “I know firsthand the importance of specialized workforce training for this and other industries, and we will continue to invest in North Carolina’s world-class training programs that support companies like SCHOTT Pharma.”
Partnering with the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) on this project were the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System, Commerce’s Division of Workforce Solutions, Wilson County, the City of Wilson, and the Wilson Economic Development Council.
“Our existing network of German companies, workforce development and apprenticeship programs and many German communities across the state are what attracts a steady flow of German interest in North Carolina,” added Christopher Chung, CEO of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. “We are proud that North Carolina can provide the resources companies like SCHOTT need, fortifying our already strong economic ties with Germany.”
SCHOTT Pharma’s products are used in home appliances, pharmaceuticals, electronics, optics, life sciences, automotive and aviation. The company has provided glass for the European Southern Observatory’s Extremely Large Telescope, the National Ignition Facility’s nuclear fusion laser system and Quotient’s transfusion diagnostic tools.
