Alcoa Expands Massena, New York, Operations

Aluminum products manufacturer Alcoa plans to expand its operations in Massena, New York.

The $60 million project includes the rebuild and modernization of a portion of the company’s existing aluminum smelter.

“We are proud to make aluminum in New York and the United States,” said Alcoa President and CEO William F. Oplinger. “Long-term, competitively priced energy enables Alcoa to proceed with this important investment that will help us meet the demands of today while planning for tomorrow. We are extremely pleased to have worked with NYPA and ESD to achieve this outcome for our Massena Operations, which will bring economic benefits to the region and sustain American manufacturing.”

The project is being supported by $1 million in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits from Empire State Development.

“With its 100-plus-year history in Massena, Alcoa and its employees in the North Country have developed technologies and processes that have shaped the modern world,” noted Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Hope Knight. ”Thanks to support from Governor Hochul and New York State, Alcoa will continue to produce high-quality aluminum for flagship industries, supporting regional economic growth and driving innovation.”

Alcoa Corporation specializes in the production of bauxite, alumina, and aluminum products.

“The New York Power Authority’s renewal of our partnership with Alcoa is a testament to our commitment to driving economic development across New York,” added New York Power Authority Chairman John R. Koelmel. “By providing low-cost hydropower, we are ensuring that Alcoa remains competitive so that it can continue its operations, invest in its facilities, and retain family-sustaining jobs in the North Country.”?

"The presence here is important in terms of the direct jobs, the indirect jobs, and the economic impact," said Patrick Kelly, CEO of the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency.
