Lumentum Holdings Plans Greensboro, North Carolina, Production Operations

04/14/2026
Optical technology company Lumentum plans to establish operations in Greensboro, North Carolina. The project is expected to create more than 400 jobs.

The investment will include the retrofit of a 240,000-square-foot facility to support production of indium phosphide (InP)-based optical devices used in AI data centers and cloud infrastructure. Operations are scheduled to begin in mid-2028.

“Our customers are building the infrastructure that will define the next era of computing,” said Michael Hurlston, Chief Executive Officer of Lumentum. “Adding this new manufacturing facility significantly expands our capacity and ensures we can deliver the performance, reliability, and scale required for the AI revolution.”

To support the project, state and local economic development partners are providing incentives.

“I am appreciative that Lumentum chose North Carolina for their next and largest U.S. semiconductor manufacturing plant,” noted Lee Lilley, Secretary of Commerce for North Carolina. “Our strong semiconductor presence and skilled workforce allow us to support industry leaders serving the rapidly growing advanced AI market.”

Lumentum develops and manufactures optical and photonic products used in cloud computing, telecommunications, and advanced data infrastructure applications.

“The Greensboro business community understands that global competitiveness is built through partnership,” added Geoff Foster, Board Chair of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce. “Lumentum’s investment reinforces the region’s reputation as a place where innovative companies can grow and succeed.”
