BWXT Expands Jonesborough, Tennessee, Manufacturing Operations

11/08/2026
Nuclear technology manufacturer BWXT plans to expand its operations in Jonesborough, Tennessee. The $714.5 million project is expected to create 181 jobs in Washington County.

The investment will include the construction of a new manufacturing facility at the company's existing site to produce high-purity depleted uranium (HPDU) metal for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

“We want to thank Gov. Bill Lee, Commissioner McWhorter and the State of Tennessee for the wonderful support we have received. This grant will help create benefits for the community that will last decades,” said BWXT Ordnance Tennessee General Manager Jeff Messaros.

To support the project, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) awarded an economic development grant through the state's Nuclear Energy Fund.

“Securing our nation’s energy independence is one of our top priorities in Tennessee, and BWXT has been an outstanding partner in advancing that mission. This project marks another significant investment in our growing nuclear ecosystem, where companies have now pledged to create nearly 4,000 new jobs and invest more than $10 billion since the inception of our Nuclear Energy Fund. Congratulations to BWXT on another fantastic expansion, and we look forward to continuing to support their growth and investment in Tennessee for years to come,” noted Tennessee Deputy Governor and TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter.

BWXT specializes in nuclear technology, engineering and manufacturing for defense, energy and commercial applications. The company provides nuclear components, fuel and related services supporting national security, nuclear power generation, nuclear medicine, space exploration and environmental restoration.

“TVA and BrightRidge are proud to congratulate BWXT on its decision to expand operations in Washington County. We’re honored to partner with Washington County Economic Development Council and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development to support companies like BWXT as they make continued impactful investment in our region. Together, we’re powering growth and helping to create job opportunities in the communities we serve,” added Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Vice President of Economic Development Heidi Smith.
