Blue Sky Innovators Expands Fairfax County, Virginia, Operations

Defense technology company Blue Sky Innovators plans to expand its operations in Fairfax County, Virginia. The $7 million project is expected to create 175 jobs.

The investment will include an additional 20,000 square feet at the company’s existing facility to support a secure modular collaboration hub known as “SkyLab,” designed for software innovation and government collaboration.

“SkyLab represents our belief that speed, security, and collaboration must coexist to meet today’s national security challenges,” said Tim Tkacz, CEO of Blue Sky Innovators. “This investment demonstrates the pace and commitment required to deliver innovation where it matters most, at the point of mission execution.”

To support the project, the Commonwealth of Virginia awarded an $840,000 grant from the Opportunity Fund. Funding and services to support employee training will also be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.

“As a longtime natural leader of America’s defense technology industry, Virginia was the prime location for Blue Sky Innovators to establish SkyLab,” noted Carrie Chenery, Secretary of Commerce and Trade for Virginia. “By making it easier for government and business to collaborate in a safe and secure setting, Blue Sky is driving innovation and safeguarding our national security.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) worked with the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority to secure the project.

“Blue Sky Innovators’ expansion in Fairfax County reinforces the region’s leadership in national security and defense innovation,” added Victor Hoskins, President and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). “Their investment strengthens our ecosystem of advanced technology companies and highlights Northern Virginia’s role in supporting mission-critical capabilities.”
