Windpower 2009 Conference Closes; Industry Requests Congressional Action on Renewable Electricity Standard

05/08/2009
The American Wind Energy Association's (AWEA) Windpower 2009 Conference & Exhibition, held this week in Chicago, Illinois, concluded today, with the industry sending a message to U.S. lawmakers to mandate renewable energy standards. "What we heard loud and clear from the industry assembled here in Chicago was a call to enact a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) to secure a stable and growing market for renewable energy," says Denise Bode, CEO of the AWEA. A poll released at the conference by AWEA says that more than 75 percent of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, support an RES requiring that 25 percent of the nation's electricity be generated by renewable energy by 2025. Windpower 2009 hosted more than 23,000 attendees, up from 13,000 last year and 1,300 only five years ago; all 50 states and more than 70 countries were represented. Governors Pat Quinn of Illinois, Chet Culver of Iowa, Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, Ted Strickland of Ohio, and Jim Doyle of Wisconsin spoke at the conference and were joined in attendance by Governors Mark Parkinson of Kansas and Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania. The Windpower 2010 Conference & Exhibition will be held May 23-26 in Dallas, Texas.
