Stryker Corporation Expands Portage, Michigan, Facility

Stryker Corporation will expand capacity of its medical-device products with a $109-million investment at its 79-acre industrial site in Portage, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

In addition to boosting Stryker’s manufacturing capacity, the expansion includes amenities for employees, including new café and patio, expanded training space and newly designed offices to encourage collaboration.

In support of Stryker’s private investment to expand its manufacturing, the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) approved today a $2.6-million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. In addition to the 253,000-square-foot expansion in southwest Michigan, the global medical technology manufacturer is expected to add 260 jobs by end of 2025. Average annual salary for those positions is expected to be $73,000.

“The expansion further positions Stryker to innovate and respond effectively to the worldwide medical community for generations to come,” said Jeff Mason, CEO, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which administers programs and performs due diligence on behalf of the MSF.

“Stryker has been one of Michigan’s most innovative companies and solid corporate citizens,” he said. “This move reflects their long-term commitment to Michigan, and provides a catalytic impact for economic development throughout the southwestern region of the state.”

“As Stryker grows its industry footprint through the development of new products and acquisitions, the company’s decision to expand in the City of Portage sends a strong signal to the market that Southwest Michigan is an advantageous place to do business,” said Ron Kitchens, CEO & Senior Partner of Southwest Michigan First.

“The region’s lower costs, proximity to a diverse supplier base and access to a young, highly educated and design-minded workforce benefit companies and employees alike,” he said.

In early 2017, Stryker announced a $130-million investment for its Portage-based instruments division, including adding 105 jobs. That investment is also supported by a MSF-approved $1-million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. On June 26, the Portage City Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing to consider Stryker’s request for an industrial facilities exemption.
